Description

Our nationally accredited Mountain Skills 2 course will improve your personal skills required for hiking in Ireland. Helping you become even more self sufficient on the hills. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in the outdoors wishing to advance their navigational skills. The course is very practical and brings the student into a more challenging environment for hiking, mountain walking and trekking. We exercise our skills in the mountains in poor and night time conditions. These courses are approved by Mountaineering Ireland. Our Mountain Skills Courses forms part of the official Mountain Leader Qualification.

On completion of this Mountain Skills 2 course you will:
Be competent in advanced map-reading
Be competent in advanced navigation techniques
Be able to navigate at night and in poor visibility
Have improved compass techniques
Understand further recognition of natural features
Use of improved timing methods
Be competent route planning
Have a greater awareness of mountain hazards
Be able to manage steep ground situations
Understand emergency equipment and procedures

On day 1 we will be spending most of the morning indoors and the afternoon on the hills and continue on the mountain until well after dark. On day 2 we will spend all day on the hills covering steep and broken ground.
We cover some theory on both mornings, please bring along a pen and paper for taking a few notes.

Course includes certificate of mountain skills 2 completion.

This course is delivered over a two day period, as follows:
Day 1, Session 1:
10.00am – 1.00pm, classroom modules
Day 1, Session 2:
1.30pm – 10.00pm, outdoor practical training module, on the mountains, including night navigation.
Day 2: Session
9.00am – 5/6.00pm, outdoor practical training module on the mountains, including steep ground navigation.

The Mountain Skills training course instills the fundamentals of mountain navigation in Ireland and the U.K. Offering a solid foundation for gaining personal mountaineering proficiency. Mountain Skills training teaches the necessary skills in mountain safety, navigation techniques, knowledge of hazards, and personal equipment, so that a person finishing the course will be in a position to safely, and competently, take to the hills. Mountain Skills training and assessment also provide foundation training for those who wish to progress to further leadership qualifications, such as the Lowland Leader or Mountain Leader (ML). Mountain Skills courses are available throughout Ireland. All our instructors are qualified, insured and registered with Mountaineering Ireland.

What to bring

Waterproof Jacket and trousers, hill walking boots, walking trousers/tracksuit bottoms/leggings (avoid cotton) base layer- top/tee shirt/fleece, take a spare if you feel the cold, mid layer- fleece, hat and gloves and backpack. Essential: Head torch

Food

You are required to being a packed lunch and drink for each day.

You will require a map, a Silva Type 4 compass and head torch, details on booking

All our instructors are qualified in remote emergency care and wilderness first aid, you are in safe hands.
