On our nationally accredited Mountain Skills 1 course you will learn the personal skills required for hill walking in Ireland. Helping you become self sufficient on the Mountains. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in the outdoors. The course is very practical and instills the basics in hiking, mountain walking and trekking to participants. These courses are approved by Mountaineering Ireland. Our Mountain Skills Courses form part of the official Mountain Leader Qualification.

This course includes:
Map-reading, map scale and legend explained
Navigation techniques
Introduction to compass techniques
Recognition of natural features
Contour line explanation and recognition
Distance measurement and timing of walks
Route planning
Mountain hazards
Personal equipment
Emergency equipment and procedures

On day 1 we will be spending most of the morning indoors and the afternoon on the hills, on day 2 we will spend all day on the hills.
We cover some theory on both mornings, please bring along a pen and paper for taking a few notes.

Course includes tea/coffee and certificate of completion.

What to bring

Waterproof Jacket and trousers, hill walking boots, walking trousers/tracksuit bottoms/leggings (avoid cotton) base layer- top/tee shirt/fleece, take a spare if you feel the cold, mid layer- fleece, hat and gloves and backpack.


You are required to being a packed lunch and drink for each day.


You will require a map and a Silva Type 4 compass, details on booking

All our instructors are qualified in remote emergency care and wilderness first aid, you are in safe hands.
