Description

On our nationally accredited Lowland Leader Award Training you will learn the skills required to lead walking groups in lowland countryside, woodland and coastal areas. The training course examines route-finding skills, understanding hazards and risk management, leadership techniques and an appreciation of equipment, resources and the impact of weather. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in working in the outdoors. These courses are approved by Mountaineering Ireland. Our Lowland Leader Award Training starts you on the path of formal outdoor qualifications.

On completion of this course you will:

Be confident in Leadership skills and group management
Be able to use navigation techniques
Understand walking skills
Be able to plan walks, find routes
Be confident in map and compass work
Understand personal and group equipment
Understand hazards and emergency procedures
Understand environmental awareness, conservation, hillside access and land ownership
Be able to source local information and maps
Understand the scope of the award

We cover theory on both mornings, please bring along a pen and paper for taking notes.

In order to start your training, you must first be a current member of Mountaineering Ireland, and register, with them, for the Award. Once registered, you can directly to book your training course or assessment. Some experience in hill walking is required or you can complete a mountain skills course prior to your training.

This training can be combined with the Camping Leader Award for expedition styled journeys.

What to bring

Waterproof Jacket and trousers, hill walking boots/shoes, walking trousers/tracksuit bottoms/leggings (avoid cotton) base layer- top/tee shirt/fleece, take a spare if you feel the cold, mid layer- fleece, hat and gloves and backpack. Full details on booking.

Food

You are required to being a packed lunch and drink for each day.

First Aid

All our instructors are qualified in remote emergency care and wilderness first aid, you are in safe hands.
