Our Hiking Essentials training courses will provide you with a great and practical introduction to hiking. We teach the basics of navigation, map reading, how to use a compass and mountain safety. Ensuring you may be able to safely enjoy the mountains of Ireland. This is a one day outdoor course, generally lasting eight hours. It is suitable for beginners and improvers. The course is delivered by a qualified, Mountaineering Ireland course provider who will tailor the day to suit your needs.

The course teaches: 
Interpreting the map, its scale, symbols and contour lines 
Practical navigation techniques, using map and compass
How to recognise natural features from the map
Real world practical use of a compass 
How to take a grid references 
Mountain hazard awareness
How calculate the length and time of a hike
Emergency equipment overview

What to bring:
Waterproof jacket and trousers
Hill walking boots
Walking trousers/tracksuit bottoms/leggings (avoid cotton) 
Base layer- top/tee shirt/fleece, take a spare if you feel the cold
Mid layer- fleece
Hat and gloves
Backpack with liner or rain cover
You will require a map and a Silva Type 4 compass, details on booking
A general level of fitness is required.
